A bunch of elderberries are surrounded by white flowers
September 2, 2024
Summer’s wrapping up, and while we might be doing a happy dance as the kids head back to school, we all know what’s lurking around the corner—the dreaded back-to-school cold. But don’t worry, I’ve got a little secret that’s been a game-changer for my family: elderberry syrup. Why I Swear by Elderberries * These tiny, dark berries are like nature’s multivitamins. They’re packed with antioxidants and vitamins that help boost your immune system, making them a perfect defense against colds and the flu. And if you’re already starting to feel that scratchy throat or stuffy nose, elderberry syrup can help lessen the symptoms. It’s like having a natural, sweet-tasting remedy that actually works. Where to Find Elderberries If you’re lucky enough to live in the countryside, you might just find elderberry bushes on a walk or drive. They love soaking up the sun, so check along roadsides or open fields. There’s something satisfying about picking your own berries, knowing you’re gathering the good stuff straight from nature. But if foraging isn’t in the cards (or you’re just not up for it), don’t worry! You can easily order organic elderberries online and have them delivered right to your door. It’s like having a little piece of nature shipped directly to you. Harvesting Elderberries: My Favorite Part Some varieties of elderberries can be toxic when eaten raw – the best way to avoid this is to make sure you always cook your elderberries well first When you find a bush full of those gorgeous, deep purple berries, it’s a bit like discovering a hidden treasure. I always bring along a pair of scissors and a bucket or bag to collect them. Snip the clusters, let them fall into your container, and you’re set. Back at home, give the berries a good rinse to wash away any dirt or bugs, and let them dry on a towel. Here’s a trick I love: freeze the berries overnight in a bag. The next day, give the bag a shake, and the berries will pop right off the stems. It’s oddly satisfying and a great way to relieve some stress!
From Childhood Remedy to Supercharged Elixir
Dawn's Simple Life

 Comfort in a Cup

Ok, I’ve gone and done it! After all my efforts to keep my family healthy, I wore myself out and caught the bug myself. It’s the classic story, right? Growing up, my mother always made me a comforting tea whenever I was sick—honey, lemon, sugar, and hot water. It always seemed to do the trick, warming me up, soothing my sore throat, and just making me feel cared for. It’s a tradition I’ve happily passed down to my own kids.

But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve revamped that childhood favorite to give it a little more healing power (and, let’s be honest, a bit of a grown-up twist). I’ve added more flavors and ingredients to help knock out whatever nasty bug is going around. And yes, I even sneak in a little nip of whiskey for myself—it’s all about comfort, after all!

My Revamped Comfort Tea Recipe

Here’s what I’ve been sipping on as I rest up and fight off this cold. Packed with antioxidants and immune-boosting ingredients, this tea has become my go-to for getting back on my feet.

Ingredients:

- Hot water (not boiling, just hot enough to soothe)

- 3 tbsp honey (natural cough suppressant)

- 2 tbsp sugar (because it makes everything taste better)

- 2 tbsp lemon juice (loaded with vitamin C)

- A pinch of grated ginger root (or ground ginger, if that’s what you have)—great for fighting inflammation

- 1 crushed clove of garlic (or a pinch of garlic powder)—this one’s a powerhouse for boosting immunity

- A pinch of cayenne pepper (optional, but excellent for clearing sinuses)

- A pinch of cinnamon (optional, for extra flavor and antioxidants)

Simply stir everything together, and you’ve got yourself a delicious, warming, and healing cup of tea. It’s the perfect remedy for when you’re feeling run down or just need a little extra TLC.

Sending Prayers and Healing Vibes

While I’ve been resting, I’ve had a lot of time to think about what’s going on in the world, and my heart is breaking for everyone affected by Hurricane Helene and the upcoming Hurricane Milton. I may not be a particularly religious person, but you can bet I’m sending every prayer, good vibe, and ounce of positive energy I have out into the universe for those impacted.

I’m hoping with everything in me that those who are missing are found safe, that the injured heal quickly, and that homes can be rebuilt. Most importantly, I pray that everyone stays safe as the next storm approaches. The devastation from these hurricanes is unimaginable, my thoughts and heart are with those dealing with so much more.

This simple tea has been a source of comfort for me for years, and while it’s helped me through many colds and flu bugs, I know there are bigger battles being fought out there. So, as I sip my tea and rest up, I’m sending all my healing thoughts to those who need them most. Stay safe, everyone.
